Parent Guide to the Charles C. Sherrod Library

For your student

1. Help is always available.

University level research includes problem-solving for even the brightest student. Relax, because your student has expert help available, both online and in person, regardless of the hour. Students can work with our friendly and knowledgeable reference librarians by phone, email, text message, social media (twitter & facebook) or online chat. Naturally, we prefer working with them one-on-one and developing relationships. We offer drop-in research assistance at the Information Center Desk during service hours. We are also available for individual or group consultations at your student's convenience.

2. Librarians provide consistency.

Remember, students will have dozens of different professors during their years at the university. Developing a congenial relationship with a librarian, who advises them about research strategies, navigating academia, and the life of the mind, can provide them with the academic consistency they need to persist in their studies, graduate, and attain their dreams.

3. We have millions of e-resources available 24/7.

Your student has 24/7 access to a wealth of information and resources (with a few clicks, gaining access to over 130 research databases, over 20,000 online journals and over 100,000 e-books is easy!)

4. If we don't have it, we can get it.

With a click of the "Get it @ ETSU" button,  your student can request nearly anything, even if we don't have access to it from one of our partner libraries. And it's all free.

5. Food and drink allowed.

At Sherrod Library, your student experiences a relaxed library environment. We want students to enjoy food and beverages while they contemplate and collaborate. They're free to bring pizzas, fast food, etc., from off-campus or on-campus eateries. We only ask that they are neat, and use our recycling stations  and trash cans. Einstein Bros Bagels serves up bagels, muffins, chai, coffee, and other products on Sherrod's first floor.

6. Library as a relaxing place.

Our librarians plan entertaining events to lure students into our space, and help them relax from stress and studying. During exams we offer free chair massages from licensed massage therapists, visits with therapy dogs, jigsaw puzzles, coloring, origami, Legos, and other opportunities for play. Recharged and rebooted, your student will be ready for another round of focused study. When you visit our Facebook page, you can see photos of recent visits from therapy dogs as well as completed puzzles, which dozens of students spent between five minutes and several hours piecing together.

7. Extrovert or Introvert? We have spaces for both.

The library offers study rooms so your student can study individually or collaborate with a group. Additionally, we have hundreds of study carrels, comfortable chairs, and large tables. Whatever your student's study style, we have it covered.

8. Night owl or early bird? We provide a safe nest.

Students flock to our Late Night Study space, which is open 24/7. For your student's safety, it is staffed by a security guard at night, and is accessible only by ETSU ID card.

9. Need to print, copy or scan?

The university gives each student $25 in free printing, which is automatically loaded on their ETSU ID card at the beginning of each semester. Printing services are available in the library. Students can print in black and white (10 cents per side) and color (25 cents per side). Black and white copying is 10 cents a copy and those machines are located on the first and second floors of the library. As for scanning - it's completely free.

10. Need a laptop? Here, borrow ours!

Students may borrow a laptop (for in-library use only) from the Information Center in the library lobby.

11. Print lives!

We have over 700,000 books in our library collection, including scholarly works, popular fiction, and children's literature. And we don't just have books. In our media collection we have 3,000 DVDs and CDs, as well as streaming video. Your student can also download digital audio books via OneClickDigital to a smartphone, tablet, or mobile device to listen to as she/he has fun at the Center for Physical Activity.
